I have consulted and managed business infrastructures of all shapes and sizes the past 12 years or so of my career. While spending money every 4-5 years on a new infrastructure for the latest and greatest technology may not be an option for everyone, here are a few factors to look for while building or re-designing a solid infrastructure.
- Virtualization has revolutionized the industry as it is hardware independent. Not only will it save you costs on servers and power consumption, it will also run your legacy programs in virtual OS environments tha may not be supported by newer OS releases. ROI with virtualization is one of the highest returns I've ever seen with a product currently. This is definitely a major item to consider if you're using multiple server platforms.
- ERP's and CRM's can streamline your busness into one backbone infrastructure. This will increase efficiency between all functional areas of your business and rid of those 10 different resource hungry programs you currently use.
- Load your server with the power it needs. Go for that quad processor and that max amount of memory. Don't be afraid! Your programs want it!
It can be costly to streamline or make your business more efficient, but once you compare your TCO to your ROI over a span of 5 years, you will know that you finally made a great investment.
